This book is a Hindi translation of Pavan K Varma’s much appreciated and critically acclaimed biography of one of the most prominent poets of Urdu and India in the nineteenth century, Mirza Asaduallah Khan Ghalib. Ghalib lived through and chronicled one of the most turbulent periods of Indian history. Despite experiencing such drastic changes around him and facing many difficulties in personal life, he left behind a corpus of poetry that has enthralled commoners and scholars alike. He created a path-breaking style of letter writing and helped many junior poets. Ghalib is unique also for he did not leave behind a large corpus, at least in Urdu poetry, yet remains one of the most sought after Indian poets even today.
